Update for September 8, 2010 ~ New Moon in Virgo

When Mercury and Pluto cross paths, you know something intriguing and important is likely to bubble up from deep below! The New Moon in Virgo is ruled by Mercury, being the planetary ruler of Virgo, so whatever attributes Mercury has will affect the New Moon cycle.

Mercury has been retrograde since Aug.20. (That's "interesting attribute" number one.) Mercury has also been largely unaspected (no major aspects, other than the Sun and Moon) since the end of July, and this has been driving just about everyone I know clear around the bend! (That's "interesting attribute" number two.) The last exact aspect Mercury made before it went into unaspected freefall was a trine to Pluto. And now, as Mercury prepares for the direct station turn on Sep.12, it is again trining Pluto—BUT it will not become exact. Instead, Mercury will station about 2½ degrees shy of an exact trine to Pluto. But wait, there's more! Pluto also stations direct just 2 days after Mercury does, so we'll have the two of them together radiating intense stationary energy, in trine aspect to each other. (How many "interesting facts" am I up to now?)

This whole complicated dance puts an intriguing spin on the whole New Moon in Virgo theme. Virgo is typically associated with the pure chaste virgin, but when you peel away the modern cultural morality, Virgo becomes quite a different gal. And with her ruling planet stationing trine to Pluto, it is bound to bring the deep, dark feminine energy bubbling up to the surface. Meet Virgo as Persephone! There's lots to explore in this myth that reveals a secret side of Virgo.

The "dark feminine" is not meant as a sinister quality, but as a very deep receptive, feminine side of the psyche, regardless of what your gender happens to be. When we connect with that part of ourselves, we are initiated into the deeper mysteries of human experience. It is an essential part of who we are, but understanding comes with age and life experience. This lunar cycle could bring you to the brink of that deep place within you, giving you an opportunity to explore your inner caverns a little deeper.

This is a busy update even without all the Virgo-Mercury-Pluto intrigue! Venus enters Scorpio just 5 hours after the New Moon is exact. Six days later, realizing she's gone, Mars chases after her into Scorpio. Jupiter retrogrades back into Pisces and soon has a blissed-out reunion with Uranus. And just before the upcoming Full Moon, the Sun moves into Libra to celebrate the Equinox.
